Today’s Topic: Thoughts and Feelings About Money
Money makes the world go round. It’s a constant evil in our lives that decides our every action and has complete control of everything we do. People often say “Money can’t buy you happiness”, but oh boy does it buy you peace of mind.
Almost everyone has to think about money at least once a day. We all make transactions, pay bills, buy products, sell goods, buy and sell services, and do other activities that involve the exchange of money.
Money is everywhere, and money controls almost everything.
People often try to look for more fulfilling things to do with their lives that don’t concern money or aren’t centered around money. The sad truth is that even a simple hobby will be involved with money at some point. Nothing is free, save for things like air and emotions, and even then there can always be an additional cost.
Take up running? Need running shoes or else your feet will suffer. Take up a new hobby? Have to buy materials or equipment to facilitate the hobby (unless of course your hobby is lying down and staring at the clouds for a few hours, in which case the most you’d need to buy is a blanket or pillow for back and neck support). Even many of the activities listed on “X amount of things you can do for free!” lists seen all over the web can be based on things that cost money. Suggestions like “Binge-watch your favorite show on Netflix!” still require that you both have a paid subscription and spend money on a TV, phone, computer, or tablet to watch the shows on, plus the electricity that powers the device.
Those that don’t have enough money – or any money at all – strive to make enough for a comfortable living, and those that have enough or too much can easily forget past struggles. Celebrities, athletes, actors, musicians, and any other person who’s made it big and is now ‘rolling in the dough’, as they say, only have to worry about their money in terms of how they can keep as much of it as possible to live their lavish lives.
Yet, without the pursuit of monetary wealth, many celebrities become bored and look to entertain themselves in other ways since money isn’t a worry anymore. Many famous people are subject to alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, and other activities that are fueled by their wealth and boredom. It’s a sad cycle that everyone has seen before, and few are excited to see again.
There is, however, a silver lining. Many use their wealth or resources to make life better for those who don’t have enough funds to live a comfortable life. Donations go to the aid of homeless, starving children, abused women, and other groups that have more wants than their resources can fulfill. These acts of kindness help to smooth over negative feelings towards money since it’s being used for good, but still can’t ultimately erase how dependent we all are on wealth and capital.
Money makes the world go round, and without it we would likely have to regress to a barter and trade system, or even further regress to survival of the fittest. Money has allowed mankind to progress into civilized societies. Money may be the root of all evil, but it’s also the reason why we live in the world we do today.
